Storm Surge Warning Issued in Ilocos Norte Due to Tropical Storm Paolo

Ilocos norte: Residents in low-lying coastal communities in Ilocos Norte were warned Thursday against storm surges or life-threatening coastal floods that may be caused by Tropical Storm Paolo.

According to Philippines News Agency, the state weather bureau’s 5 p.m. bulletin indicated a “moderate to high risk of life-threatening storm surge with peak heights reaching 1.0 to 3.0 m within 36 hours over the low-lying or exposed coastal localities” in Ilocos Norte and nearby provinces. In response to the warning, the provincial government has urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid beaches, and cancel all marine activities.

“Let us remain alert and prioritize safety at all times,” stated Ilocos Norte Governor Cecilia Araneta-Marcos, urging relevant authorities to implement proactive measures in anticipation of the weather disturbance. The Philippine Coast Guard in the province has mobilized its personnel and resources, including its deployable response group, across various substations ahead of Tropical Storm Paolo’s approach.

The adverse weather conditions have also led to the cancellation of several Philippine Airlines (PAL) flights to Manila from the Laoag International Airport scheduled for Friday, October 3, 2025. The cancelled flights include PR 2196, PR 2197, PR 2198, and PR 2199. Affected passengers are advised to contact PAL for assistance and rebooking arrangements.

As of 5 p.m., Ilocos Norte was under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1, as reported by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). PAGASA noted that Paolo might intensify further, potentially reaching the severe tropical storm category by Thursday night or Friday. The cyclone is expected to possibly make landfall over southern Isabela or northern Aurora on Friday and is projected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday.
