ALBAY—Classes in Albay, Sorsogon, and Camarines Sur were suspended on Friday as heavy rains, driven by the southwest monsoon, threatened to cause floods and landslides across these provinces.

According to Philippines News Agency, Camarines Sur Governor Vincenzo Renato Luigi Villafuerte issued a comprehensive suspension for all levels in the province's 35 towns and two cities, citing ongoing moderate to heavy rainfall which is expected to persist until Saturday afternoon. “In consideration of the safety of the students and general public, classes at all levels, both public and private, are suspended today, Sept. 13,” stated Governor Villafuerte.

The governor also warned that the region could see flooding and rain-induced landslides, particularly in areas highly susceptible to such hazards, posing a significant threat to public safety.

Similarly, Albay Governor Edcel Grex Lagman urged residents via social media to heed advisories from municipal and city officials, indicating a proactive approach to community safety amid worsening weather conditions.

In Sorsogon, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) also announced class suspensions as a precaution to protect students and the public. The PDRRMO has instructed local disaster management offices to activate disaster preparedness measures, monitor vulnerable areas, and ensure that contingency plans are in place and that information about precautionary measures is disseminated to the public efficiently.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued a heavy rainfall warning for these three provinces effective from 5 a.m., attributing the severe weather to the effects of the southwest monsoon and the trough of Severe Tropical Storm Bebinca.
