S. Korea Adds Two More Gold Medals in Short Track at Winter Asiad

Harbin: South Korea finished the short track speed skating competition at the Asian Winter Games in China with two more gold medals on Sunday, raising its overall tally to six gold medals. Choi Min-jeong became the first triple gold medalist of the competition when she won the women’s 1,000-meter title at Heilongjiang Ice Events Training Center Multifunctional Hall in Harbin.

According to Yonhap News Agency, after holding off teammate Kim Gil-li, Choi now owns a gold medal in every short track race for women in her Asian Games career-500m, 1,000m, 1,500m, 3,000m relay, and mixed 2,000m relay. Choi previously secured victories in the 500m and the mixed relay titles on Saturday. Moments after Choi’s victory, Jang Sung-woo claimed the men’s 1,000m title over teammate Park Ji-won for his second gold in Harbin. Jang, the mixed relay champion, also earned bronze medals in the 500m and 1,500m on Saturday.

However, South Korea was shut out of medals in both the women’s 3,000m relay and the men’s 5,000m relay for the first time in Asian Games history later Sunday. Relay events made their Asian Games debut in 1990, and South Korea had never before failed to win a relay medal. In the women’s relay, South Korea’s Choi, Kim Gil-li, Lee So-yeon, and Kim Geon-hee settled for fourth place, missing out on a complete sweep of all women’s titles in Harbin.

In the final exchange of the 27-lap race, Choi pushed Kim into the lead past China. However, during the final stretch, Kim’s skate blade made contact with that of China’s Gong Li, causing the South Korean skater to take a tumble and allowing Gong to cross the finish line first. In the men’s relay, South Korea’s Jang, Park Jang-hyuk, Park Ji-won, and Kim Tae-sung led most of the 45-lap race, before China moved out in front due to a quick exchange with five laps to go.

The race came down to the two anchors, Park Ji-won for South Korea and Lin Xiaojun for China, a naturalized athlete who won a 2018 Olympic gold under his Korean birth name, Lim Hyo-jun. The two engaged in a physical battle over the final straight, and after Lin fell down and Park nearly lost his balance, Kazakhstan took advantage and zoomed past both teams for the fortuitous gold. Park crossed the line in second place but was later penalized for hitting Lin with his left forearm during their late battle.

South Korea ended up winning six out of nine gold medals up for grabs in short track, along with four silver and three bronze medals.
