The government has called on relevant authorities to speed up modernizing revenue collection, and improving the collection mechanism for stable sources of income such as land and asset taxes.
The government’s monthly meeting for July 2023 was held on July 24-25 under the presidency of Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Prime Ministers, cabinet members, representatives of line ministries, equivalent agencies and provincial governments in face to face and online modes.
The meeting stated that a focus must be placed on strict implementation of legal instruments on strengthening the management and prevention of revenue leaks, thriftiness and anti-extravagant lifestyle, and the use of state vehicles.
It asked the Ministry of Energy and Mines to accelerate reviewing the implementation of investment projects in the mining sector and prepare a report on its review so that it can be submitted to the next monthly meeting of the government. It was asked to establish a committee to monitor the export of rare earths to ensure their composition are detailed and pricing is determined according to international market standards.
The government also urged relevant authorities to continue to implement the results of Lao Business Forum 2023, identify urgent measures that can reduce import of unnecessary goods.
It also asked the Public Works and Transport sector to focus on devising urgent legal instruments related to rail services, rail transport prices and the role of the dry port in the Lao PDR.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare was asked to promote the production of skilled workers to meet market demand and work with employment companies to monitor Lao workers working overseas, especially in the Republic of Korea.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism was asked to organize a preparatory meeting to discuss preparations for the 27th ASEAN Tourism Forum, related meetings and the launch of Visit Laos Year 2024 as well as improve legal instruments on tourism and tourism environment.
The Ministry of Education and Sports was urged to work with relevant sectors at central and provincial levels to translate into reality the government resolution on measures designed to address teacher shortage, school dropouts and the promotion of vocational education.
