Philippine Ferry With Over 80 People On Board Caught Fire

A ferry with over 80 people on board caught fire yesterday, off Batangas province, south of Manila, injuring one person, a spokesperson for the Philippine Coast Guard said.

Commodore Armando Balilo said, fire engulfed the M/V Asia Philippines, shortly before 6.00 p.m. local time, at the Batangas anchorage area.

He said, the vessel was carrying 82 people, including 34 crew and 48 passengers, and 16 cars.

Balilo said, at least 39 people have been rescued, and the one injured was taken to a hospital. “The rescue operation is ongoing,” he said.
