Legazpi City: The Department of Labor and Employment in Bicol (DOLE-5) and the Department of Agriculture in Bicol (DA-5) have introduced a new initiative, the PHP20-per-kilogram rice program, under the government’s ‘Benteng Bigas, Meron Na’ (BBM Na) initiative in Albay province.
According to Philippines News Agency, DOLE-5 Director Imelda Gatinao stated that the program is set to benefit 17,164 minimum wage earners in the region. Gatinao emphasized that the program is designed to be a crucial lifeline for minimum wage workers, promoting food justice and economic dignity.
The program was launched at the LCC Mall event center in Legazpi City, where at least 500 mall employees were among the first to avail themselves of the affordable rice. Each minimum wage worker is eligible to purchase up to 10 kilograms of rice. Gatinao also encouraged other business owners to join the program, which aims to increase the accessibility of affordable, locally produced rice.
Gatinao highlighted that the rice subsidy initiative aligns with the Marcos administration’s broader goals of ensuring food security, promoting social equity, and fostering inclusive economic recovery. In a separate interview, DA-5 Director Rodel Tornilla assured the public that the BBM Na rice program is sustainable and extends beyond a one-time distribution effort.
Tornilla mentioned that the program will also cater to vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities. He pointed out that farmers stand to gain from having a direct buyer for their produce under the BBM Na rice program.
Romeo Tan, chief executive director of the LCC Group of Companies, expressed that the BBM Na rice program is a valuable resource for their employees, supporting them with affordable living through accessible and locally produced rice. Tan expressed optimism for ongoing partnerships between private and public sectors to improve the lives of Bicolanos.
Karen Tripulca, a beneficiary from Brgy. Puro in Legazpi City, shared her gratitude to President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for the program, which allowed her to purchase 10 kilograms of rice at a reduced price. She plans to use the savings to cover other household expenses.
Gary Alta, a new employee at the LCC department store, echoed similar sentiments, highlighting that the program alleviates his family’s daily financial burdens, ensuring they have rice to eat without worry.
