N. Korea Intensifies Anti-American Indoctrination of Students Ahead of Korean War Anniversary

Pyongyang: North Korea is intensifying its anti-American indoctrination of students in anticipation of the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1950-53 Korean War, as reported by state media.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) stated that “education on anti-imperialism and anti-Americanism is being solidly carried out at all basic education units in Pyongyang, tailored to the emotional characteristics of each student age group.” This initiative involves students from various educational institutions in the capital, including a high school and an elementary school in Pyongyang’s Sosong and Daesong districts. These students participated in activities such as touring an education hall or watching video clips, all aimed at highlighting the “aggressive nature of imperialists.”

The KCNA further emphasized that through this educational program, “students are embracing the unwavering perspective that the enemy’s aggressive nature will never change.” This approach is part of North Korea’s annual strategy to ramp up anti-American sentiment around the anniversary of the Korean War’s outbreak on June 25. Typically, the month following this anniversary is marked as a period of joint struggle against the United States, featuring activities that underscore anti-American sentiment.

Historically, the anniversary day is designated as the day of the anti-American struggle, with public rallies taking place throughout June. It’s noteworthy that North Korea paused these public rallies between 2018 and 2021 during a period when leader Kim Jong-un was engaged in summits with U.S. President Donald Trump, but resumed them in subsequent years.

Experts suggest that North Korea’s handling of this year’s Korean War outbreak events could be indicative of the country’s current diplomatic stance, especially as Trump and South Korea’s new President Lee Jae-myung have both expressed willingness for dialogue with Pyongyang.
