Marcos: PH to Integrate AI into Gov’t Operations ‘As Soon As We Can’

Gyeongju: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. announced the Philippine government’s commitment to integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its operations ‘as much as we can, as soon as we can,’ emphasizing the urgency of embracing AI to avoid being left behind in the global digital transformation.

According to Philippines News Agency, President Marcos stressed the importance of immediate action during a press briefing following the conclusion of the 2025 APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Summit held in Gyeongju, South Korea. He likened AI’s inevitable influence to a wave, cautioning that hesitation could result in the country missing valuable opportunities. “You’re missing a chance if you wait. AI is going to come — parang alon ‘yan. Kahit anong gawin mo, mababasa ka,” Marcos articulated, highlighting the necessity of adapting to the technological advancements to avoid being left behind.

The discussions at the APEC Summit heavily featured AI, with leaders recognizing its potential benefits and inherent risks. President Marcos acknowledged the rapid evolution of AI, stating, “What AI can do one month ago is different from what AI will be able to do one month from now.” He underscored AI’s potential as a powerful tool that must be leveraged swiftly to maximize its advantages.

The Philippine government is actively exploring effective strategies for AI adoption across various departments. This initiative involves collaboration with global experts and local think tanks to ensure the safe and beneficial implementation of AI technologies. President Marcos also emphasized the importance of addressing policy implications, including ethics, data protection, and public trust, as part of the AI integration process.

The APEC Summit concluded with the Gyeongju Declaration, which endorsed the APEC AI Initiative. This regional framework aims to build AI capacity and promote safe, inclusive, and human-centered digital innovation across member economies.
