MAN ARRESTED FOR MISAPPROPRIATING CREDIT CARDS TO PERFORM UNAUTHORISED TRANSACTIONS

The Police have arrested a 24-year-old man, for his suspected involvement in using misappropriated credit cards to perform unauthorised transactions.

On 22 June 2022, the Police received a report from a victim who discovered several unauthorised transactions made using his missing credit cards. Through investigations, officers from the Commercial Affairs Department established the identity the man and arrested him on 7 July 2022.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had found the victim’s card holder at a void deck which contained several credit cards. He then allegedly used two of the credit cards to make a total of 33 unauthorised transactions amounting to more than $2,700. A pair of shoes, five bottles of perfume and four bottles of facial products purchased using the credit cards were recovered and seized as case exhibits. The cardholder containing several credit cards was also recovered and seized as a case exhibit.

The man will be charged in court on 8 July 2022 with cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code 1871, which is punishable with an imprisonment term of up to 10 years and a fine.

The Police would like to remind members of the public that the unauthorised use of another person’s credit or debit card is a serious offence. The Police take a serious view against any person who commit fraud and the perpetrators will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The Police would like to advise all credit/debit card holders to call their card-issuing banks immediately if their credit or debit cards are lost or stolen, and to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

Keep your credit or debit cards safe with you at all times;

Call your card-issuing bank immediately if your credit or debit cards are lost or stolen;

Opt for an SMS notification to be sent to your mobile phone for any charges incurred on your credit or debit cards; and

Check your bank statements regularly and alert the bank immediately should there be any discrepancies or unauthorised charges.
