Lucena city: The city government has announced the suspension of face-to-face classes from Monday to Wednesday in response to a surge in influenza-like illnesses (ILI) over the past two weeks.
According to Philippines News Agency, the suspension affects all levels in both public and private schools from October 20 to 22. This measure aims to curb the spread of the virus on campuses and surrounding areas. Mayor Mark Alcala has advised schools to transition to online classes to ensure students continue their education without interruption.
Data from the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) revealed that from October 1 to 15, Lucena City reported 6,720 cases of ILI. The Department of Education (DepEd) recorded 4,695 of these cases in public schools, while private schools reported 2,025 cases. This prompted swift action from the city government.
CESU has recommended several measures to control the virus’s spread. These include a three-to-five-day isolation period for individuals exhibiting flu-like symptoms, thorough disinfection of school facilities during the class suspension, and mandatory face mask usage in schools and public spaces.
Health experts have also advised the community to maintain cleanliness, consume nutritious food, and seek medical attention if flu symptoms develop. The Department of Health has clarified that there is no ILI outbreak, stating that the current increase in cases aligns with the usual seasonal flu trend during colder months.
Despite the recent increase, ILI cases from January to September this year have decreased to 121,716 compared to 135,538 cases in the same period last year.
