Protesters in China, fed up with the government’s strict zero COVID policies and, in some cases, Communist Party rule itself, have been flashing blank sheets of white paper on university campuses and the streets of major Chinese cities. The blank sheet of paper confounds state censors scouring social media photos for anti-government slogans and also expresses symbolic mourning for lives lost in the lockdowns.
