La union: A farmers’ association in La Union is the beneficiary of a PHP4.5-million shared service facility (SSF) for soft broom production provided by the provincial government through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, an official reported Thursday. The initiative is intended to aid in the soft broom making activities of the association members, who primarily engage in tiger grass farming.
According to Philippines News Agency, La Union Governor Mario Eduardo Ortega has identified the Puguil Farmers Association of Barangay Puguil in Santol town as the receiving group. The association, which consists of 243 members, sought assistance from the provincial government to establish a processing center facility to support their soft broom (boi-boi) making endeavors.
Tiger grass, a key strategic commodity of the province, is integral to the livelihood of the community. The new facility, measuring between nine to 11.5 meters, is funded under Republic Act 7171, which promotes the development of farmers in Virginia Tobacco Producing Provinces. It is expected to enhance productivity, improve quality, and increase the market competitiveness of the soft brooms produced by the association.
Governor Ortega stated that the Puguil Farmers Association will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the facility. The initiative aims to promote inclusive growth, foster sustainable livelihoods, and support rural enterprise development, encouraging communities like Puguil to play an active role in building a stronger and more competitive La Union.
