Iloilo Mayors Demand Action as Palay Prices Drop

Iloilo: The League of Municipalities of the Philippines (LMP) Iloilo chapter has taken a significant step in response to the decreasing buying prices of palay (unhusked rice) by passing two crucial resolutions. These resolutions advocate for the regulation of rice importation and the repeal of the Rice Tariffication Law, reflecting growing concerns among local leaders.

According to Philippines News Agency, these resolutions were approved during a meeting held on Wednesday and are currently pending final signatures, including that of LMP Iloilo chapter president and Badiangan Mayor Suzette Mamon. In a recent interview, Mayor Mamon emphasized the importance of regulating rice importation, especially during harvest periods, to prevent the local market from being overwhelmed by imported rice.

Mayor Mamon stated that such regulation is necessary to protect the interests of farmers, particularly those involved in rice cultivation. She also urged Congress to review the Rice Tariffication Law to ensure that it supports and safeguards farmers.

Additionally, Mayor Mamon highlighted the need for a national policy concerning the procurement activities of the National Food Authority (NFA). Although the NFA offers a maximum procurement price of PHP23 per kilo for palay, their storage facilities are limited and often at full capacity. Mayor Mamon mentioned that municipalities are willing to provide additional warehouse space and expressed plans for further discussions with the NFA to address these issues.

Governor Arthur Defensor Jr. is actively collecting data to identify the underlying causes of the low palay prices. Recent figures indicate a decline in palay prices in Iloilo, dropping from PHP16.90 per kilo in the first week of September to PHP16.75 in the second week.
