DSHUD Allocates P31-Million Aid for Bicol Residents Affected by Storms

Bicol: The Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) 5 (Bicol) has allocated PHP31 million in financial aid to residents in the Bicol region whose homes suffered damage due to recent severe weather events.

According to Philippines News Agency, DHSUD-5 Director Maria Amoroso announced that PHP19 million had been disbursed earlier this year, with an additional PHP12 million recently distributed. This financial support has reached hundreds of families who were displaced by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (international name Trami) and Super Typhoon Pepito (international name Man-yi) across the region.

The aid has benefited at least 877 families, with 601 recipients in Minalabac, Camarines Sur, 189 in Tabaco City, and 87 in Tiwi, Albay. Amoroso emphasized that the agency’s primary focus remains on Masbate, where Severe Tropical Storm Opong has affected more than 90,000 homes, with over 20,000 completely destroyed and approximately 73,000 partially damaged.

To expedite assistance, the department is deploying validators to Masbate to process the necessary documents for those seeking support. Amoroso stated, “We’re fast-tracking financial assistance there. Next week, we’ll do full validation to fast-track the processing of papers for shelter support.”

In light of recent earthquakes, Amoroso highlighted the critical need for compliance with zoning and building regulations to ensure the safe construction of homes. She stated, “Filipinos should understand the importance of zoning regulations in securing permits, especially with the increasingly frequent earthquakes we’re experiencing. So, we need to be aware and comply with regulatory requirements, particularly in building homes.”
