DOH-Ilocos Urges Vigilance Despite Drop in Influenza-Like Illness Cases

Manila: The Department of Health (DOH) 1 (Ilocos Region) is urging residents to take the necessary precautions against influenza-like illness (ILI) amid a decrease in the number compared to last year.

According to Philippines News Agency, there have been 8,842 ILI cases recorded from Jan. 1 to Oct. 15 this year, which is 16.9 percent lower than the 10,605 cases during the same period in 2024.

Out of the total cases, Pangasinan reported 2,960, followed by Ilocos Norte with 2,229, La Union (1,762), Ilocos Sur (1,345), and Pangasinan’s chartered city of Dagupan City (546). Most cases were mild and manageable at home. Nonetheless, health officials emphasize the importance of early detection, preventive measures, and responsible health practices to avoid further spread.

‘We are closely monitoring the situation and have activated intensified surveillance and response measures. We advise residents to remain vigilant, practice proper hygiene, and seek medical attention for flu-like symptoms,’ DOH-1 Director Paula Paz Sydiongco said in a statement on Tuesday. The most-affected age groups were 1 year to 4 years with 2,694 cases and 5 years to 9 years with 1,654 cases. No deaths were reported.

Influenza-like illness causes fever, cough, sore throat, aches, and fatigue. During cooler months, cases rise quickly, straining healthcare and risking complications in vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, children, and those with health issues. Sydiongco advised washing hands, using sanitizers, avoiding infected people, covering coughs and sneezes, and wearing masks in crowded areas or when symptomatic.

‘For those who feel sick, it is better to stay home to prevent spreading the illness to others and see a doctor if symptoms persist or worsen. Influenza vaccination can also help, especially in high-risk groups,” she said. The DOH-1 is also collaborating with local government units, schools, and health facilities to enhance disease surveillance, ensure timely reporting, and distribute health advisories and vaccines.
