Manila: The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) and the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) have signed a memorandum of agreement to institutionalize a more robust and rights-based framework for the protection and empowerment of Filipino migrant workers and their families.
According to Philippines News Agency, CHR Chairperson Richard Palpal-latoc emphasized the contributions of Filipino migrant workers to economic growth and stressed the need for programs that ensure their protection and participation in nation-building. Palpal-latoc reaffirmed the CHR’s commitment to ensuring that the rights of these workers are recognized and upheld.
The agreement, signed on June 7, aims to enhance human rights protection through awareness efforts, free legal and psychosocial services via legal clinic caravans, and timely assistance in cases of abuse, exploitation, or trafficking. It also includes mechanisms for joint quick response operations, collaborative research, policy development, and inclusive consultations to ensure meaningful representation of migrant workers in policymaking.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac highlighted the importance of a rights-based approach in safeguarding the welfare of migrant workers, advocating for respect and solutions when rights are violated.
