Canada Commits Over P26M for Emergency Relief in Philippines

Manila: Canada is providing over PHP26 million (CAD625,000) in humanitarian assistance to support emergency relief efforts in the Philippines following the series of earthquakes and storms that struck parts of the country. The Canadian Embassy in Manila announced that this funding would be directed through three non-government organizations: World Vision, Philippine Red Cross, and Angat Buhay (Angat Pinas, Inc.).

According to Philippines News Agency, the Secretary of State (International Development) Randeep Sarai stated, “The Philippines is especially vulnerable to natural disasters, and Canada stands with its people as they face the impacts of these recent disasters. This support will help provide some relief, and we will continue to explore additional ways to help as needed,” during the funding announcement.

Canadian Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Secretary of State (Small Business and Tourism) Rechie Valdez also expressed her sympathies to the disaster-affected Filipinos. “My heart goes out to the Filipino families impacted by natural disasters. In this difficult moment, Canada is helping communities across the Philippines get back on their feet, providing life-saving assistance now and supporting resilience for the weeks ahead,” she said. She emphasized Canada’s commitment to working with reliable partners on the ground and supporting the Filipino people throughout the recovery process.

The allocation details reveal that PHP14.5 million (CAD350,000) will be designated for World Vision to provide relief items, emergency shelter, protection services, and water, sanitation, and hygiene services. The Philippine Red Cross will receive PHP10.3 million (CAD250,000) to aid its ongoing operations in Cebu. Angat Buhay will receive PHP2 million (CAD50,000) for distributing dignity and hygiene kits and providing emergency shelter in Cebu.

Additionally, the Canadian government offered to supply relief materials from its emergency stockpiles in the region if required. A statement from Global Affairs Canada mentioned, “Canada continues to monitor the situation and remains in close contact with experienced partners to assess and respond to evolving needs.”
