Mariveles: The Australian government has donated PHP34 million worth of drones and operator training to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to enhance strategic maritime domain awareness and assist in various operations. In a formal handover ceremony held in Mariveles, Bataan, Australian Ambassador to the Philippines HK Yu presented 20 aerial drones to PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan.

According to Philippines News Agency, the donation aims to strengthen the PCG's capacity to fulfill its duties as both a maritime and archipelagic nation. Admiral Gavan expressed that this support allows the PCG to pursue its responsibilities more effectively and sustainably. The drones will enhance the PCG's role in maintaining peace and prosperity for its citizens and lawful users of the seas.

The donation includes a four-day training program for 30 members of the PCG Aviation Command Unmanned Aerial Vehicles Squadron. Experts from Australia's Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water's Office of the Chief Remote Pilot will conduct the training.

This initiative is part of Australia's broader civil maritime cooperation with the Philippines, which also encompasses vessel remediation, postgraduate scholarships, operational training, marine protection, and annual Law of the Sea courses. Ambassador Yu remarked that the donation represents increased maritime cooperation with the Philippines and supports the PCG's modernization efforts.

Yu highlighted Australia's commitment to its partnership with the PCG and emphasized how this donation aligns with the Philippines-Australia Strategic Partnership. Last year, she announced Australia's plans to double civil maritime cooperation funding with the Philippines to PHP649 million from 2025 to 2029.

The two nations have also signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance maritime cooperation, promoting a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region while upholding international law.
