Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Intensifies in Caraga

Manila: The Department of Health in the Caraga Region (DOH-13) is intensifying its antimicrobial resistance (AMR) awareness campaign to prevent its adverse effects. In a press briefing, DOH-13 Officer-In-Charge Director IV Sadaila Raki-in emphasized the vital role of the media in disseminating the campaign to the people in the region.

According to Philippines News Agency, Raki-in highlighted the media’s commitment to partnering with DOH-13, ensuring that accurate information is conveyed to the public, even reaching remote areas of Caraga. She noted the reliance of residents, particularly in geographically isolated disadvantaged areas, on social media and other popular platforms like the radio for their information.

Leslie Cortes, a senior pharmacist at DOH-13, presented the importance of raising public awareness about the hazards of AMR. She explained that bacterial infections can become problematic due to incorrect antibiotic use. Cortes noted that antibiotics are crucial in treating and preventing infections by either killing bacteria or inhibiting their growth. However, AMR occurs when microorganisms that cause infections survive exposure to medication.

Cortes stressed that one key method to prevent AMR is the proper use of antibiotics, which involves obtaining a prescription to ensure correct dosage, directions, and completion of treatment.

Dr. Amethyst Kathleen Alicante, a senior medical officer at DOH-13, discussed the negative impacts of AMR, including longer treatment confinements and additional financial burdens. She mentioned that bacterial resistance renders certain antibiotics less effective, necessitating the use of more expensive alternatives for treatment.

The DOH-13 is actively collaborating with various stakeholders, government health facilities, and workers across the provinces as part of the campaign to reach more residents in the region.
