Death Toll From Severe Tropical Storm Nalgae In Philippines Climbed To 72, 14 Others Missing

MANILA, The death toll from severe tropical storm Nalgae, which unleashed floods and set off landslides in several parts of the Philippines, has climbed to 72, a spokesperson for a government disaster agency said, today.

 

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council spokesperson, Rafaelito Alejandro said, the bulk of the fatalities were in Maguindanao province, in the southern Philippines, with 67 deaths. He added that at least 14 people have remained missing.

 

Maguindanao is a province in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM). Its interior and local government minister, Naguib Sinarimbo, said, nine towns in Maguindanao were severely flooded, and most parts of Cotabato City in the BARMM were underwater for the first time in years. BARMM “raised the alert level to red” since yesterday.

 

According to local media reports, a village in Datu Odin Sinsuat, was buried in the landslide, resulting in at least 50 deaths.

 

Nalgae is the 16th cyclone to lash the Philippines this year. It slammed into Catanduanes, an island province in the Bicol region, before dawn today.

 

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said, Nalgae was blowing winds of 95 km per hour, with gusts of up to 160 km per hour today.

 

The national weather bureau said, Nalgae was moving west-north-westward at 30 km per hour and expected to intensify further, as it moved inland. It is forecast to cross Metro Manila and its adjacent areas this afternoon through Sunday morning.

 

The bureau warned, flooding and rain-induced landslides are expected, especially in areas highly susceptible to these hazards and in localities with significant antecedent rainfall.

Philippines’ COVID-19 Cases Breach Four Million Mark In Total

MANILA, The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines passed the four million mark, after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 1,551 new infections yesterday.

 

The DOH said, 38 more patients died from COVID-19 complications, taking the death toll to 63,959. The number of active cases rose to 21,685.

 

Metro Manila, the capital region of over 13 million people, tallied 364 new cases.

 

The Philippines reported its highest COVID-19 single-day tally of 39,004 new cases on Jan 15. The country, with a population of around 110 million, has fully vaccinated over 73.5 million people.

Malaysia Reported 3,296 New COVID-19 Infections, One New Death

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia recorded 3,296 new COVID-19 infections as of midnight, bringing the total tally to 4,893,733, according to the health ministry.

 

The new infections were 10 new imported cases and 3,286 local transmissions, data released on the ministry’s website showed.

 

One new death was reported from the pandemic, taking the death toll to 36,463.

 

The ministry reported 1,960 new recoveries, bringing the total number of COVID-19 patients cured and discharged to 4,827,215 in the country.

 

Currently there are 30,055 active cases, with 58 being held in intensive care units, including 35 in need of assisted breathing.

 

The country reported 1,334 COVID-19 vaccine doses administered yesterday, and that 86.1 percent of the population have received at least one dose, 84.3 percent are fully vaccinated with two doses, 49.8 percent have received a first booster dose and 1.6 percent have received a second booster dose.
