Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs welcomed the Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)

On 1st September 2022, H.E. Mr. Vijavat Isarabhakdi, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Thailand, had a meeting with Mr. Jagan Chapagain, Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), during the latter’s visit to Thailand from 31 August – 1 September 2022.

Both sides exchanged information and views on situations and humanitarian challenges in the region, the provision of humanitarian assistance to people in need, and next steps for the implementation of the ASEAN-IFRC MoU on the Strengthening of Community Resilience in Southeast Asia.

IFRC Secretary General commended active roles played by the Royal Thai Government and the Thai Red Cross Society in the provision of humanitarian assistance for people affected by conflict, disaster and COVID-19 pandemic, as well as their close cooperation with IFRC. He also highlighted the importance of the secondment of aid workers to other Red Cross Societies in the region or IFRC. VFM informed IFRC Secretariat of Thailand’s plan to make financial contribution to IFRC’s Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) to support disaster preparedness and response at the community level, thus reiterate Thailand’s commitment and long tradition on humanitarian assistance.

Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs signed the book of condolence following the passing of H.E. Mr. Mikhail Gorbachev, former President of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics

On 5 September 2022, H.E. Mr. Vijavat Isarabhakdi, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Thailand, on behalf of the Thai Prime Minister, visited the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Bangkok, to sign the book of condolence following the passing of H.E. Mr. Mikhail Gorbachev, former President of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics, on 30 August 2022 at the age of 91. The Vice Minister was warmly welcomed by

H.E. Mr. Evgeny Tomikhin, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Thailand.

H.E. Mr. Mikhail Gorbachev was born on 2 March 1931 in Stavropol, the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics and assumed the position of the last president of the Soviet Union between 1990 – 1991. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990 for his significant role in redefining the relationship between the West and the East. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Mr. Gorbachev founded the International Foundation for Socio-Economic and Political Studies or the Gorbachev Foundation.

31 PERSONS ARRESTED IN ENFORCEMENT OPERATION AGAINST PUBLIC ENTERTAINMENT OUTLETS

The Police conducted an enforcement operation against public entertainment outlets located along Middle Road on 3 September 2022.

During the joint operation by the Central Police Division and the Criminal Investigation Department, a total of 31 persons were arrested. 29 women, aged between 20 and 33, were allegedly found to be providing hostessing services, and were arrested for working without a valid work permit under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act 1990. Two men, aged 31 and 35, were arrested for offences under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act 1990.

The two outlets, which allegedly provided hostessing services within their premises, were found to have contravened the Public Entertainment Act 1958.

Under the Public Entertainment Act 1958, any person who provides or assists in providing any public entertainment in contravention of this act carries a fine not exceeding $10,000. Under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act 1990, the offence of employing a foreign employee without a valid work pass carries a fine of not less than $5,000, and not more than $30,000, a jail term of up to 12 months, or both. Under the same Act, the offence of being in employment without a valid work pass carries a jail term of up to two years, a fine of up to $20,000, or both.

The Police will continue to carry out regular enforcement checks on public entertainment and nightlife establishments to suppress illicit activities. The Police will continue to take tough enforcement action against criminal activities and those found engaging in such activities will be dealt with firmly in accordance with the law.
