Bombardier Celebrates Graduation of First Cohort of Red Oak, Texas-based Apprentices in Comprehensive Training Program

RED OAK, Texas, Nov. 04, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Bombardier today announced the graduation of 10 participants from its first cohort of apprentices enrolled in its comprehensive apprenticeship training program developed in association with Texas State Technical College (TSTC) in Red Oak, Texas. With the successful completion of the training program, graduates are offered full-time employment at Bombardier’s Red Oak facility as an aircraft assembler or aerostructures apprentice to work on the Global 7500 business jet’s advanced smooth flex wing.

The two-year Department of Labor (DOL) accredited Bombardier Aerospace Apprenticeship Program (BAAP), launched in December 2019, offers students the opportunity to enter the high-tech aerospace sector with no specific pre-requisites. It challenges them to present a winning attitude and develop mechanical dexterity and sound logic skills to pass an entry-level aptitude test. In turn, Bombardier and TSTC offer expert training in conjunction with TSTC’s excellent facilities, allowing students to benefit at no cost from industry-tailored modules, experienced instructors, tools and equipment and financial support. Since its inception, some 80-plus individuals are currently being trained in the program. Bombardier and TSTC plan to recruit more than 50 individuals into the program over the next two years.

China slams US curbs on visiting scholars from military-linked institutions

China’s foreign ministry has hit out at Washington after U.S. officials refused entry to dozens of its overseas students and visiting fellows with valid visas.

Foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said nearly 30 students and visiting scholars were repatriated following interrogation in August 2021, despite holding visas to enter the U.S.

“In August 2021 alone, nearly 30 Chinese students and visiting fellows to the U.S. suffered similar unjust treatment, with many more reporting rough handling during harassment, interrogation, and searches,” Wang told a regular news briefing in Beijing on Nov. 3.

He said officials asked the students whether they or their parents were members of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), and whether they had been assigned any task by the Chinese government before leaving.

Wang said officials had taken cellphone snapshots of routine military training in colleges and universities as evidence of connections to China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA).

“Such practices … undermine mutual trust and cooperation [and] jeopardize the steady and healthy development of bilateral relations,” Wang said.

President Trump issued an executive order on May 29, 2020, accusing Beijing of engaged in “a wide-ranging and heavily resourced campaign to acquire sensitive United States technologies and intellectual property, in part to bolster the modernization and capability of its military, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA).”

“The [Chinese] authorities use some Chinese students, mostly post-graduate students and post-doctorate researchers, to operate as non-traditional collectors of intellectual property,” the order said.

“Students or researchers from [China] studying or researching beyond the undergraduate level who are or have been associated with the PLA … provide particular cause for concern,” it said.

According to a number of media reports, many of those affected are from seven universities believed to have close ties with the PLA: Beihang University; the Beijing Institute of Technology; the Harbin Institute of Technology; Northwestern Polytechnical University; Harbin Engineering University; Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics; and Nanjing University of Science and Technology.

‘Specific tasks and missions’

U.S.-based commentator Wu Zuolai said the CCP has long required its overseas students to help satisfy their country’s thirst for new technology.

“They organize them and send them out with specific tasks and missions,” Wu told RFA. “These people will go on to do military industrial or national defense research after returning from the U.S.”

“Some of these [visiting students and fellows] are not there in good faith, and not just as academics,” he said. “Their aim is to get hold of technological secrets fast and hand them over to the Chinese government, or to state-owned companies and military-industrial firms.”

“That’s why … a lot of PLA-linked universities have been blacklisted … and why students and scholars with a particular background are being subjected to severe scrutiny, and are being refused entry,” he said.

Some 370,000 Chinese students are currently estimated to be in the U.S., around 40 percent of whom are in science and engineering.

Australia-based researcher Song Wendi said the U.S., as a more open society, could afford to show more tolerance.

“The U.S. needs to show a more open and tolerant attitude, out of self-confidence, because it’s a democracy rather than an authoritarian regime,” Song said. “Only then can it demonstrate the superiority of its system.”

“It can only attract talent from other countries if it remains open to those countries,” she said. “That way, overseas students from China or anywhere will likely … choose not to return … and the U.S. will have even more talent when it comes to competition with China.”

Bombardier’s Safety Standdown celebrating 25 years of aviation safety stewardship and education

MONTREAL, Nov. 04, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Nick W. Verdea, a Certified Aviation Manager (CAM) and Global Leadership Professional (GLP), has been named the 2021 winner of the Bombardier Safety Standdown Award, as selected by the Safety Standdown Advisory Council members. Verdea, Director of Aviation and Corporate Travel for The Williams Company in Tulsa, OK., is a long-time supporter and advocate of this highly influential event.

Verdea accepted the award on November 3, 2021, during the 25^th annual Bombardier Safety Standdown event in Wichita, KS. The two-day, in-person safety gathering brought industry professionals together for enhanced learning opportunities, compelling workshops, presentations and more, laying the foundation for safety training and professional development. For a quarter of a century, Bombardier has led the industry in providing aviation professionals with critical knowledge-based aviation training and lifelong professional development opportunities.

The Bombardier Safety Standdown Award is presented annually to an aviation professional who has demonstrated exemplary dedication to improving aviation safety through the Safety Standdown principles of Learn, Apply, Share. Verdea was nominated for his leadership in aviation safety management over the course of his 25-year aviation career by Richard Westmoreland, Director of Aviation for First Horizon. At The Williams Company, Verdea oversees the daily operations and priorities of a high-performing team of 13 that operates corporate aircraft. A major part of his responsibilities is to execute and expertly manage the annual travel services budget with a compliance concentration on travel experience and cost containment. Verdea’s commitment to safety excellence is admirable and this is clearly reflected in his many leadership roles over his career. He is a dedicated life-long learner and has an impeccable flying record of more than 13,000 accident-free hours in the cockpit.

2021 THIRD QUARTER RESULTS

CNH Industrial reports solid third quarter performance. Consolidated revenues of $8.0 billion (up 23% compared to Q3 2020), net income of $329 million, adjusted diluted EPS of $0.36, and adjusted EBIT of Industrial Activities of $469 million (up $231 million or some 100%). Free cash flow of Industrial Activities negative $0.7 billion.

Financial results presented under U.S. GAAP

Net sales of Industrial Activities of $7,537 million, up 23%, with increases in all segments due to continued strong industry demand and price realization.

Adjusted EBIT of Industrial Activities of $469 million ($238 million in Q3 2020), with Agriculture adjusted EBIT of $415 million continuing the strong performance of the segment. Adjusted EBIT increased by $58 million and $45 million for Commercial and Specialty Vehicles and Construction, respectively. Powertrain adjusted EBIT of $44 million ($60 million in Q3 2020).

Adjusted net income of $496 million, with adjusted diluted earnings per share of $0.36 (adjusted net income of $156 million in Q3 2020, with adjusted diluted earnings per share of $0.11). In the first nine months of 2021, adjusted diluted earnings per share was $1.10, surpassing all past full year performances.

Reported income tax expense of $79 million, with adjusted effective tax rate (adjusted ETR) of 13% and 22% for the three and nine months, respectively. Both ETRs reflect favorable changes to the Company’s expected geographic mix of pre-tax earnings and net discrete tax benefits.

Free cash flow of Industrial Activities was negative $0.7 billion due to seasonal working capital absorption, exacerbated by supply chain disruptions in the latter part of the quarter. Total Debt of $23.7 billion at September 30, 2021 ($26.1 billion at December 31, 2020). Industrial Activities net cash position at $0.7 billion, a decrease of $0.7 billion from June 30, 2021.

Available liquidity at $13.5 billion as of September 30, 2021. In September 2021, CNH Industrial Capital Canada Ltd. issued CAD$300 million in aggregate principal amount of 1.50% notes due October 1, 2024.
