PM ANWAR UNVEILS MALAYSIA MADANI LOGO

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 2 (Bernama) — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today unveiled the logo of Malaysia Madani, a concept he introduced as an effort to drive and restore Malaysia’s dignity and glory in the global arena.

According to an infographic posted on his Facebook and Twitter pages, the logo features a palm-like design bearing the four colours of the Jalur Gemilang.

The five fingers with red and white stripes highlighted in the logo simbolise the principles of Rukun Negara, the foundation of Malaysia’s ideology, while the blue circle on the ‘palm’ signifies consensus and unity among Malaysians.

The crescent moon symbol which represents Islam as the religion of the Federation, is also used as one of the elements of the logo, in addition to the 14-point star which signifies unity among the 13 states and Federal Territories of the Federation.

The four colors used for the logo are blue, symbolising national unity, inclusivity and brotherhood; red (courage, identity and determination); yellow (value of tradition, culture and local wisdom); and white (nobleness, purity of heart and good will).

Anwar in the same posting said Malaysia Madani was proposed by him as the way forward for Malaysia as well as its multiracial and multicultural society.

“We will strive to uphold these values to the best of our ability,” he said.

The concept, which he introduced officially on Jan 19, was based on six pillars, namely namely sustainability, prosperity, innovation, respect, trust and compassion.

MALAYSIA CONDEMNS RELENTLESS SUPPRESSION CAMPAIGN BY ISRAEL AGAINST PALESTINIANS

KUALA LUMPUR– Malaysia condemns in the strongest possible terms the relentless and ferocious suppression campaign by Israel against the Palestinians, especially against detainees from Jenin in the West Bank.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in a statement here today stressed that it includes suppression in several Israeli occupation prisons as well as collective punishment and reprisals.

“Malaysia calls on all right-minded world leaders and free peoples to categorically denounce the outright killings of the Palestinian peoples committed by the authorities of Israel,” he said.

Anwar said Malaysia also calls upon the international community to hold the Israeli regime to account for these crimes and demands the regime to cease immediately further acts of cruelty and barbarism.

Apart from that, he said Malaysia expresses sympathy, condolences and prayers to the families of the scores of Palestinians killed and wounded on account of the unmitigated aggression of the Israeli forces during the recent raids on a Jenin refugee camp.

He also stressed that Malaysia continues to stand in solidarity with the people of Palestine, and reaffirms its unwavering support for the Palestinians and their cause to achieve freedom from the illegal Israeli occupation and realise their aspirations for an independent and sovereign State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as their Capital.

Chinese Spy Balloon Spotted Over Western US, Pentagon Says

The U.S. is tracking a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon that has been spotted over U.S. airspace for a couple days, but the Pentagon decided not to shoot it down because it could hurt people on the ground, officials said Thursday. The discovery of the balloon puts a further strain on U.S.-China relations at a time of heightened tensions.

A senior defense official told Pentagon reporters that the U.S. has “very high confidence” it is a Chinese high-altitude balloon flying over sensitive sites to collect information. One of the places the balloon was spotted was Montana, which is home to one of the nation’s three nuclear missile silo fields at Malmstrom Air Force Base. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive information.

Brigadier General Patrick Ryder, Pentagon press secretary, provided a brief statement on the issue, saying the government continues to track the balloon. He said it is “currently traveling at an altitude well above commercial air traffic and does not present a military or physical threat to people on the ground.”

He said similar balloon activity has been seen in the past several years. He added that the U.S. took steps to ensure it did not collect sensitive information.

The defense official said the U.S. has contacted Chinese officials through multiple channels and communicated the seriousness of the matter.

The incident comes as Secretary of State Antony Blinken was supposed to make his first trip to Beijing, expected this weekend, to try to find some common ground. Although the trip has not been formally announced, both Beijing and Washington have been talking about his imminent arrival.

It was not immediately clear if the discovery of the balloon would impact Blinken’s travel plans.

The senior defense official said the U.S. did have fighter jets, including F-22s, ready to shoot down the balloon if ordered to by the White House. The Pentagon ultimately recommended against it, noting that even as the balloon was over a sparsely populated area of Montana, its size would create a debris field large enough that it could have put people at risk.

It was not clear what the military was doing to prevent it from collecting sensitive information or what will happen with the balloon if it isn’t shot down.

The defense official said the spy balloon was trying to fly over the Montana missile fields, but the U.S. has assessed that the balloon has limited value in terms of providing China intelligence it couldn’t already collect by other means, such as through spy satellites.

The official would not specify the size of the balloon, but said it was large enough that despite its high altitude, commercial pilots could see it. All air traffic was halted at Montana’s Billings-Logan International Airport from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, as the military provided options to the White House. A photograph of a large white balloon lingering over the area was captured by the Billings Gazette, but the Pentagon would not confirm if that was the surveillance balloon.

The defense official said what concerned them about the balloon was the altitude at which it was flying and the length of time it lingered over a location, without providing specifics.

Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte said he was briefed Wednesday after the Montana National Guard was notified of an ongoing military operation in Montana airspace, according to a statement from the Republican governor and spokesperson Brooke Stroyke.

Tensions with China are particularly high on numerous issues, ranging from Taiwan and the South China Sea to human rights in China’s western Xinjiang region and the clampdown on democracy activists in Hong Kong. Not least on the list of irritants are China’s tacit support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, its refusal to rein in North Korea’s expanding ballistic missile program and ongoing disputes over trade and technology.

On Tuesday, Taiwan scrambled fighter jets, put its navy on alert and activated missile systems in response to nearby operations by 34 Chinese military aircraft and nine warships that are part Beijing’s strategy to unsettle and intimidate the self-governing island democracy.

Twenty of those aircraft crossed the central line in the Taiwan Strait that has long been an unofficial buffer zone between the two sides, which separated during a civil war in 1949.

Beijing has also increased preparations for a potential blockade or military action against Taiwan, which has stirred increasing concern among military leaders, diplomats and elected officials in the U.S., Taiwan’s key ally.

The surveillance balloon was first reported by NBC News.

Some Montana residents reported seeing an unusual object in the sky during the airport shutdown Wednesday, but it’s not clear that what they were seeing was the balloon.

From an office window in Billings, Chase Doak said he saw a “big white circle in the sky” that he said was too small to be the moon.

He took some photos, then ran home to get a camera with a longer lens and took more photos and video. He could see it for about 45 minutes, and it appeared stationary, but Doak said the video suggested it was slowly moving.

“I thought maybe it was a legitimate UFO,” he said. “So I wanted to make sure I documented it and took as many photos as I could.”

DFA-MOAO HOSTS 178TH MARITIME FORUM HIGHLIGHTING DEEP SEABED MINING, SEA-LEVEL RISE, AND THE NATIONAL PLAN OF ACTION ON MARINE LITTER

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Maritime and Ocean Affairs Office (MOAO), in collaboration with the Department of Natural Resources (DENR) and the Embassy of Denmark in the Philippines, hosted the 178th Maritime Forum of the Maritime League on 24 January 2023 to discuss (1) the Outcomes of the Deep Seabed Mining Consultations hosted by the MOAO last December 2022; (2) Sea Level Rise and Small Fishing Communities National Plan of Action on Marine Litter (NPOA); and (3) the Net Zero Emissions by 2050 Scenario (NZE).

Assistant Secretary Maria Angela A. Ponce expressed her appreciation to Maritime League President Vice-Admiral Eduardo Ma R. Santos AFP (Ret), and acknowledged the Maritime League’s “unique and instrumental role” in bridging knowledge-sharing between government agencies, private institutions and the academe with the common goal of improving the Philippine Maritime Sector.

In their presentations, MOAO Director Robert D. Quintin shared the outcomes of the Deep Seabed Mining Consultations organized by the DFA Maritime and Ocean Affairs Office last 16 December 2023. Director Quintin discussed the next steps and strategies in relation to deep seabed mining for the Philippines.

DENR Assistant Secretary Michelle Angelica Go highlighted the global concerns on the Sea Level Rise and Small Fishing Communities National Plan of Action on Marine Litter (NPOA). In the presentation, Assistant Secretary Go stressed that sea-level rise due to climate change and land subsidence due to over-extraction of groundwater are the twin dangers that cause inundation which puts small fishing communities at risk, this requires comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach to address the sea-level rise and marine plastic pollution through the NPOA.

His Excellency Ambassador Franz-Michael Mellbin, Ambassador of the Royal Danish Embassy in the Philippines, shared Denmark’s advocacy, expertise and commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, particularly on the Net Zero Emissions 2050 Scenario. Ambassador Mellbin highlighted the importance of collective approach between the public and private sector to support initiatives to make the maritime industry more sustainable.

Held in virtual format, the 178th Maritime Forum was one of the most well-attended sessions, gathering over two-hundred sixty (260) participants, from thirty-three (33) foreign missions in the Philippines, six (6) of whom are represented by their Ambassadors, Philippine Foreign Service Posts all over the world, and partner agencies here in the Philippines.

The Maritime Forum is held monthly under the auspices of the Maritime League, a non-profit foundation established in 1995 to advance the interests of the Philippine maritime sector, and promote maritime development and safety through better information, cooperation, and unity of effort among the stakeholders of the maritime industry.
