Supply of chicken adequate until Aidilfitri – KPDN

The supply of chicken across the country is sufficient until the Aidilfitri celebrations at the end of next month, said Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub.

Therefore, he said consumers need not worry about the supply since data shows that it is sufficient until the coming festival period.

“I have received detailed information today from the Department Of Veterinary Services. Officially, the data shows that there is enough supply until Aidilfitri,” he told reporters after distributing dates to visitors and traders at the Taman Perling Ramadan bazaar here today.

Salahuddin said KPDN enforcement officers have been instructed to tighten monitoring throughout the month of Ramadan until after Aidilfitri.

“My advice to traders is, as long as the government still sets a control price or ceiling price for chicken which is RM9.40 (per kg), I hope it will be followed.

“If they are dealing with supply issue or need help from KPDN, we are ready to help,” he said

Drop in supply of eggs in Terengganu during Ramadan – KPDN

The Terengganu Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has admitted that there has been a drop of up to 33 per cent in the supply of eggs in the state during the month of Ramadan due to a shortage from out-of-state suppliers.

Its director Saharuddin Mohd Kia said it is estimated that people in Terengganu consume one million eggs per day and the supply received is around 600,000 eggs but decreased in Ramadan to only around 400,000 eggs.

“There is no egg farm in Terengganu which gets its supply from farm operators in Melaka, Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Selangor, and Perak.

“The feedback received from the egg wholesalers stated that the main factor behind this sudden drop is due to lack of eggs received from farm operators. It is due to the increasing demand for eggs during Ramadan and the farms prioritise their own local market first,” he said in a statement today.

Saharuddin said purchases above the normal rate by consumers, micro, small and medium enterprise operators and Ramadan bazaar operators also caused certain outlets to run out of eggs earlier before the next shipment arrives as scheduled.

However, he said, an inspection carried out today found that only one out of 13 egg wholesalers as well as one out of 39 selected retailers ran out of supply

“In fact, the outlets have already made bookings and farmers and wholesalers will carry out distribution soon,” he said.

Meanwhile, Saharuddin advised consumers to purchase eggs prudently and reminded traders not to take advantage of the dire shortage to raise prices.

He said traders who deliberately increase the price of eggs can be prosecuted under Section 11 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 and if found guilty, a company can be fined up to RM500,000 and individuals can be fined up to RM100,000 or imprisoned for a maximum period of three years or both or compounded up to RM50,000.

Unity Govt National Convention to enhance compatibility of coalition parties – Ahmad Zahid

The Unity Government National Convention scheduled on May 14 at the World Trade Centre (WTC) Kuala Lumpur can bolster the compatibility of political party leaderships under the Unity Government.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the first convention following the formation of the Unity Government, would provide an opportunity for the leadership of coalition parties from various levels to be together.

“Even though the Unity Government secretariat had held two meetings, the convention would involve the leadership of various parties from branch, state constituency, division, state and national levels.

“It will create goodwill at all levels. We have to create good chemistry among the leaders and it will be filtered down to the grassroot level,” he told reporters after attending the Majlis Sentuhan Ramadan at Masjid Jamek Al-Islah Pokok Tampang here today.

Also present was Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Deputy Chief Minister I, Datuk Ahmad Zakiyuddin Abd Rahman.

When asked if there were hints of which party contesting in which seat, in the state election, he said it was still too early.

“Still too early for us to give any indications. What is important is that it is based on winnability. It is not about contesting to get certain number but more importantly it is about winning,” he said.

According to the Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, in Penang the top leadership is leaving it to the state leaderships, who is Penang Pakatan Harapan chairman, Chow Kon Yeow and Penang UMNO liaison chief, Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir to discuss.

Ahmad Zahid who is also UMNO president said the Unity Government at national level is only touching on policy matters.
