Speech by Minister Chan Chun Sing at 24th Distinguished Chinese Language Teacher Awards Ceremony

Tireless in learning, tireless in teaching

1. Mr. Chen Kangwei, Deputy CEO of Singapore Press Holdings, Ms. Li Huiling, President of Chinese Media Group, Mr. Wu Xindi, Editor-in-Chief of Lianhe Zaobao and Lianhe Evening News, teachers, gentlemen and ladies, good afternoon.

2. The Chinese Media Group started to hold the “National Model Chinese Teacher Award” in 1998. The award was renamed the “National Outstanding Chinese Teacher Award” in 2018, and it has entered its 24th year. The purpose of the awards is to affirm the contributions of Singapore Chinese teachers to Chinese education and cultural heritage, and at the same time commend teachers for their spirit of actively improving their personal professionalism.

Prominent encirclement in the predicament-not tire of learning

3. In a blink of an eye, it has been nearly two years since the outbreak of Coronary Disease. Under the epidemic prevention measures last year, teachers had to move their classrooms online, and learn to use new technologies in a short period of time, change the way of teaching and interacting with students, and try to provide students with the guidance and guidance they need. help.

4. Today, our Chinese teachers not only overcome various challenges brought by the epidemic, but also strive to improve themselves and create new teaching models. The school is also actively planning and implementing mixed teaching to respond to the post-epidemic era and diversified learning needs to create a richer and more fulfilling Chinese learning experience for students.

5. In addition to the epidemic, changes in the language environment have undoubtedly brought great challenges to the teaching of Chinese teachers. The results of the “2020 National Census” show that English has greatly replaced Chinese in the past decade and has become the most common language used by Singapore Chinese at home. In the age of online information, most of the resources that children come into contact with are mainly English. When there are relatively few opportunities to be exposed to Chinese in daily life, learning Chinese and Chinese requires greater effort. Some students are even afraid to learn or resist learning Chinese and Chinese.

6. In such a big environment, our Chinese teachers can be said to have shouldered more important responsibilities. They must learn 18 martial arts, rack their brains, and try to encourage students to use Chinese and Chinese, fall in love with Chinese, and like Chinese culture.

7. Here, I would like to express my appreciation for our Chinese teachers’ attitude of “insatiable in learning”.

Chinese teachers are “guides”-tirelessly instructing people

8. Among the Chinese teachers who won this year’s awards, one teacher once asked the students to eat laksa. When the teacher readily agreed, he also put forward the condition that students must use these foods to make a Chinese video introducing local food before eating up. Sure enough, there is no free lunch in the world!

9. Another award-winning teacher often tells students some short stories in their lives to attract students’ attention and encourage them to speak and think. She felt that if it was about ancient celebrity cultural stories, students with weaker Chinese in the class might not understand it. But if it’s about a teacher’s story, students may be more interested in listening to it and will actively participate in the discussion.

10. Instead of saying that they are just teaching a Chinese class, Chinese teachers are more like Chinese “guides”. They must make good use of all kinds of opportunities and through various channels to attract students to come into contact with, understand and love Chinese step by step. Whether it’s occasional treats at their own expense, or exposure to embarrassment in front of students, the teachers are very hard-working. They will work hard to make Chinese teaching more interesting and closer to students’ lives according to the needs of different students, and arouse their sympathy for Chinese and Chinese.

11. Here, I also want to show respect for our Chinese teachers’ spirit of “teaching people tirelessly”.

Chinese-language media keep up with teaching goals

12. News and current affairs are important life materials for learning Chinese. The 2021 middle school Chinese language course implemented this year uses more language materials close to student life to enrich learning, and news and current affairs are commonly used language materials among them.

13. Newspaper Holdings Chinese Media Group also provides various Chinese news and current affairs content through its newspapers, student newspapers, radio stations and digital platforms, and provides teachers with abundant Chinese auxiliary teaching resources, making Chinese and Chinese a language in daily life. Let students be able to “learn and make good use of”.

Inject vitality into Chinese teaching

14. The enlightenment of Chinese teachers to students is not only the instillation of Chinese knowledge. The enthusiasm, care and encouragement of teachers have also become a huge driving force for students to move forward on the road of life. Among this year’s award-winning teachers, some still keep in touch with a class of students who taught 20 years ago. The student of one of the award-winning teachers also showed him the person he was interacting with, and asked the teacher to help her “review”. The teachers themselves may not remember the small things they did for the students, but these things are likely to keep the students in mind, accompany them to grow up, and even change their attitude and direction in life.

15. Here, I would like to thank all local Chinese teachers for their dedication, and also pay tribute to the eight Chinese teachers who have won awards this year. Thank you for your positive energy and persistence in “learning and teaching people tirelessly”, to inject vitality into Chinese teaching, so that students can get fun and inspiration from it, and benefit all their lives. I also hope that all teachers will continue to be Chinese “ambassadors” so that more students will be willing to learn and love their mother tongue and culture, and create a promising future for local Chinese teaching.

16. Thank you all!
