PSC holds inter-agency meeting for 2023 FIBA World Cup hosting

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) hosted an inter-agency coordination meeting on Tuesday to ensure the country’s successful hosting of the 2023 FIBA World Cup.

A total of 37 government agencies (NGAs), local government units (LGUs), private organizations and stakeholders attended the three-hour discussion held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Pasay City.

As stated in Section 24 of Republic Act 6847 which created the PSC, the sports agency can seek the support of other government entities to perform its functions.

PSC Chairperson Richard Bachmann expressed his gratitude to those who were present during the meeting as he stressed the importance of having a comprehensive plan and unified movement for the best World Cup hosting possible.

‘Since basketball is the No. 1 sport in the Philippines, this hosting is vital not only in showcasing the best quality of the game to our kababayans (countrymen) and the world, but also in using sports as a universal opportunity to bond, connect and make impossibilities happen,’ Bachmann said in a news on Tuesday.

‘May all our resolutions and agreements in this meeting be in accordance with the objective of creating an amazing basketball environment that unites people and encourages them to ‘Win for All.’ Maraming salamat po. Laban Pilipinas, puso! (Thank you very much. Fight Philippines),’ he added.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Al Panlilio thanked the PSC for organizing the meeting.

‘Thank you, Chairman Dickie [Bachmann] for organizing this event. Thank you for coming. This is not for SBP alone, this is for the Philippines,’ he said.

The FIBA World Cup will return to the Philippines after 45 years.

The group phase will be played simultaneously in the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan from August 25-30, with the games in the Philippines to be held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum and SM Mall of Asia Arena.

The final scheduled from Sept. 5 to 10 will be at the 55,000-seater Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.

Panlilio said the SBP is hoping that the Philippines would set a record attendance in the World Cup final. In 1954, 35,000 watched the game between US and Brazil at the Maracanazinho Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

‘This is it! We’ve been waiting for this for 45 years. This is the proper time that we put the Philippines back on the world map in this very crucial event. I encourage everyone to go out of their way to make this event a success,’ commented Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Hubert Guevara who spoke on behalf of the government and the Office of Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin
