The Minister of Foreign Affairs, YB Dato' Sri Anifah Haji Aman is undertaking a working visit to Brussels from 12 to 15 February 2017 to attend the High-Level Conference on Mediation at the invitation of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Belgium, H.E. Didier Reynders who will also chair the conference.

The theme of the conference is 'Mediation: possibilities and limits - Recent experiences in the pursuit of peace'. The conference seeks to share knowledge and best practices with specific countries as case studies in the field of mediation. The Conference will have three (3) thematic panel discussions.

The participation of YB Minister of Foreign Affairs in the High-Level Conference reaffirms Malaysia's commitment to support mediation as a tool to promote and maintain peace, security and stability among nations.

During the visit, YB Minister of Foreign Affairs also had a bilateral meeting with H.E. Reynders on 13 February 2017. The bilateral meeting among others discussed follow up measures to the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) Foreign Ministers Meeting on M7 which was held in New York on 20 September 2016.

Both Foreign Ministers had also discussed on strengthening cooperation and sharing of best practices on counter-terrorism including the establishment of the Counter Messaging Centre (CMC) as well as the Digital Strategic Communication Division (DSCD) under SEARCCT, to counter the narratives of terrorism and extremists.

Both Ministers also discussed issues concerning refugees and migration including Malaysia's role in addressing the root causes of humanitarian situation of the Rohingyas as well as providing humanitarian assistance, both bilaterally and at the international fora such as ASEAN and OIC. The Ministers also discussed on continuous collaboration between ASEAN and EU on areas of common interest such as trade and investment.

YB FM also briefed H.E. Reynders on Malaysia's role in mediating the Southern Philippines Peace Process as well as the Facilitator to the Southern Thailand Peace Dialogue. YB Dato' Sri Anifah Haji Aman conveyed Malaysia's support for Belgium's candidacy for the UNSC Non-Permanent Member seat for the term 2019-2020. The Ministers also discussed and exchanged views on regional and international issues of common concern.

The Working Visit provides impetus to the bilateral relations of both countries as 2017 marks the 60 years anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Belgium.
