PH to compete in Sweden muay thai meet

Seven Filipino Muaythai fighters will compete in the 17th International Federation of Muaythai Amateur World Championships slated on May 18 to 28 in Jonkoping, Sweden.

Seeing action in the seniors division are Jonathan Polosan (63.5kg), Peter Mark Bayaras (57kg), Philip Delarmino (54kg) and Arlyn Ranes (48kg) while 2015 Royal World Cup gold medalist Jessa Rivera (42kg), Ghen-Yhan Berdon (40kg) and Rudzma Abubakar (45kg) will test their mettle in the juniors category.

"I will just listen to my coaches. I don't want to dismay my supporters as well as waste all my hard work and hardships in my trainings," said Rivera.

Over 120 countries are sending teams to the 10-day meet.

"We are 100 percent ready. We did all the necessary training to prepare our athletes for this prestigious tournament," Muaythai Association of the Philippines (MAP) head coach Roland Claro told The Manila Times.

Jay Harold Gregorio and Armando Solar will assist Claro.

"As coaches to our national athletes, we shared to them our experiences and trainings we've had abroad. We also review previous fights of our opponents and taught our players on the things they should do in the ring," he added.

"We sent them to Baguio to help them acclimatize since it will be cold in Sweden when they compete. I believe, we have done great preparations in terms of strengthening and conditioning," MAP president Pearl Managuelod said.

After the World meet, the fighters will prepare for two more international competitions in September namely the Asian Beach Games in Vietnam and the World Junior Championships in Thailand.
