Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Vietnam 44 years ago, bilateral relations between both countries have grown steadily and can be described as broad-based and substantive, with both countries enjoying vibrant cooperative relations in a wide range of sectors namely trade and investment, education, security, defence and people-to-people ties. Relations between Malaysia and Vietnam reached a new milestone in 2015 when both countries elevated its relations to a Strategic Partnership. Thus, the Official Visit of H.E. Binh to Malaysia acts as a manifestation of the importance which Vietnam attaches to its Strategic Partnership with Malaysia. The visit also provides an excellent opportunity for both leaders to review the progress of the existing bilateral relations and discuss how to strengthen relations between two countries in the areas of mutual interest.
Trade between Malaysia and Vietnam have increased three-fold over the past 10 years with total trade amounting to USD10.3 billion in 2016. Following the agreement to elevate Malaysia-Vietnam relations to Strategic Partnership in 2015, both countries are on course to reach bilateral trade to USD15 billion by the year 2020. Vietnam's investment in Malaysia in 2016 was recorded at USD156 million, an increase of 42.6% from USD89.6 million in 2015. Currently, Malaysia is ranked as the seventh largest FDI contributor in Vietnam with a total registered capital of USD12.3 billion in 2016.
It is hoped that the visit will pave way to further strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries and provide a platform for Malaysia and Vietnam to build closer rapport and cultivate mutual understanding.
