National Assembly opens 5th Ordinary Session

The 5th Ordinary Session of the National Assembly’s 9th legislature was opened this morning in Vientiane in the presence of President of the National Assembly Saysomphone Phomvihane, President Thongloun Sisoulith, Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone and other Party and government leaders, and people’s representatives.

Representatives of the Lao Front for National Development, mass organizations, academia and business community also attended the meeting.

Scheduled to last through Jul 18, the meeting is expected to discuss, consider and make a decision on reports on the implementation of the current socio-economic development plan, state budget plan, monetary plan, and two national agendas on Addressing Economic and Financial Difficulties, and Drug Issues in the first half of 2023 and targets set for the next six months.

The government is expected to use the meeting to brief members of the National Assembly about the draft 10-year national strategy on mineral development 2021-2030, the implementation of the social protection strategy, and the national strategy on water and water resources management 2030.

Lawmakers are also expected to discuss the adoption of four new laws including Law on Health Affairs, Employment, Land Tax, and Lao Young Pioneers, and amendments to six laws namely Law on Commercial Banks, Aquatic Animals and Fisheries, Wildlife, Printing and Distribution, Protection of the Rights and Interests of Children, and Military Court.
