MAN ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY CHEATING AN E-COMMERCE PLATFORM OF MORE THAN $100,000

The Police have arrested a 39-year-old man for his suspected involvement in cheating the e-commerce platform, Lazada, of more than $100,000.

On 16 August 2021, the Police received a report of suspected fraudulent activities on the e-commerce platform, where a seller had masqueraded as buyers and allegedly defrauded Lazada of more than $100,000 by abusing the platform’s voucher payments and buyers’ refund schemes.

Through follow-up investigations and close collaboration with Lazada, officers from the Commercial Affairs Department established the identity of the man and arrested him on 18 August 2021 in the vicinity of Silat Avenue. A desktop computer, mobile phones and SIM cards which were used to facilitate his fraudulent activities, were seized.

Investigations are ongoing. The offence of cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, is punishable with an imprisonment term that may extend to 10 years and a fine.

The Police take a serious view of persons who may be involved in scams and frauds, and perpetrators will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
