LTO gears up for safer roads during holy week, summer exodus

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) will be placed on heightened alert beginning March 31 until April 10 in preparation for the expected influx of travelers during the extended holy week break and the beginning of the summer vacation. In a statement on Monday, the LTO said ‘heightened alert’ status will involve conducting roadworthiness inspections in terminals, random drug testing on drivers and conductors of public utility vehicles (PUV), and strict enforcement of traffic laws to ensure the safety of travelers and motorists. LTO Chief, Assistant Secretary Jose Arturo ‘Jay Art’ Tugade, said these inspections are mandated under Republic Act 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code and other related laws. Roadside assistance will also be available to motorists. Tugade urged the public to cooperate and follow the rules of the road for a smooth and safe trip. Aside from the main roads in the North and South of the National Capital Region (NCR), LTO personnel will also monitor terminals and other strategic locations in different regions. A seminar for drivers and conductors of public utility vehicles will be held on Tuesday as part of the LTO’s promotion of safe travels during the busy travel season. ‘Hinihingi rin namin ang pakikiisa ng publiko sa pag-iingat at pagsunod sa mga batas-trapiko para sa biyaheng ayos ngayong taon (We also ask for the public’s cooperation in being careful and following traffic laws for a smooth trip this year),’ he said
