House Speaker Romualdez Condemns China Coast Guard’s Actions in West Philippine Sea

MANILA — House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez on Monday issued a strong condemnation of the China Coast Guard’s maneuvers against Philippine vessels in the West Philippine Sea, labeling these actions as serious violations of international law and Philippine sovereignty.

According to Philippines News Agency, the China Coast Guard’s aggressive conduct against the Philippine Coast Guard vessels, BRP Bagacay and BRP Cape Engaño, represents a blatant disregard for the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Both the Philippines and China are signatories to UNCLOS, which outlines legal frameworks for maritime conduct. Romualdez emphasized that such actions by the China Coast Guard not only breach international law but also threaten peace and stability in the region.

Romualdez highlighted the Philippines’ commitment to maintaining regional peace and stability, noting that the nation has exercised maximum restraint despite repeated provocations. He described the recent events as part of a “troubling pattern of behavior” by Chinese forces that escalates tensions and undermines the rule of law in the maritime area.

The Speaker asserted that the Philippines will continue to defend its rights and protect its maritime domain without yielding to intimidation or coercion. He affirmed the ongoing role of the Philippine Coast Guard in conducting missions, including the supply of outposts in the contested waters.

In his statement, Romualdez called on Beijing to adhere to international norms, exercise restraint, and halt any activities that jeopardize safety and violate established international regulations. He urged a move towards dialogue and mutual respect to ensure the safety and security of the region.

Romualdez also appealed to the international community to recognize the gravity of these actions, which pose a risk to regional stability and the freedom of navigation in the West Philippine Sea. He reiterated the Philippines’ determination to work with allies and uphold international law to secure sovereignty and dignity in the face of ongoing challenges.
