TACLOBAN: The Philippine Army in Eastern Visayas is heightening its disaster response and recovery efforts in the Bicol region, deploying personnel in the aftermath of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine. Brig. Gen. Perfecto Peñaredondo, acting commander of the Army’s 8th Infantry Division, confirmed that their troops have transported 1,400 food packs, 1,400 boxes of drinking water, and 1,000 boxes of biscuits using three trucks to flood-stricken villages in Minalabac, Camarines Sur.
According to Philippines News Agency, five watercraft have been utilized to deliver 209 food packs to Bagongbong village within the same town. Additionally, the Army from Leyte and Samar provinces has provided 180 jugs of drinking water to Ilaur Sur village in Oas, Albay, and facilitated the transportation of more water and essential supplies from the Bicol International Airport to local warehouses.
Brig. Gen. Peñaredondo emphasized their commitment to relief efforts, stating, “We reaffirm our dedication to relief efforts. We stand
with our communities in these challenging times, working hand in hand with local governments to deliver essential support.” He also noted that at least 20 soldiers from Eastern Visayas are actively collaborating with local government units in Camarines Sur to distribute relief supplies.
In efforts to support communication for affected residents, the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, with assistance from the Department of Information and Communications Technology, has set up a free Wi-Fi hub at Legazpi City’s Old Airport. Peñaredondo highlighted ongoing coordination with partner agencies and local officials to ensure aid reaches those most impacted by Kristine.
