Southeast Asian Games champions Kirstie Elaine Alora and Pauline Louise Lopez will spearhead the country's campaign in the 2016 Gyeongju Korea Open International Tae kwon do Championships at the Gyeongju Gymnasium in South Korea.
Alora, who will be seeing action in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in August, battles Chinese Guo Xingyue today in the women's +73 kgs. opening round of the tournament sanctioned by the World Tae kwon do Federation.
Lopez, a gold medalist in the Asian Championships, secured a first-round bye in the women's -57 kgs. and just awaiting the winner between Song Soomi of South Korea and Yeh Li-Hsuan of Taiwan.
Also playing today are Singapore SEA Games gold medalist Kristopher Robert Uy (men's +87 kgs.); Jenar Torillos (men's -58 kgs.); Gian Carlo Gutierrez and Lyndard Adrian Rivera (junior male -55 kgs.); John Shadrach Tan (junior male +78 kgs.); and Lucille Cunanan and Baby Jessica Canabal (junior female -49 kgs.),
Fighting on Saturday are Incheon Asian Games bronze medalist Levita Ronna Ilao (women's -49 kgs.); Arven Alcantara (men's -68 kgs.); Sal Luiji Estrada (junior male -59 kgs.); and Catryn Janiella Balin and Veronica Garces (junior female -46 kgs.) while Francis Agojo (men's -63 kgs.); Joaquin Mendoza Jr. (men's -63 kgs.); Carlo Dominic Dionisio and Raymundo Alombro 3rd (junior male -51 kgs.); Alvaro Joaquin Aranton (junior male -78 kgs.); Beatrice Kassandra Gaerlan and Ryshel Jasmine Ramirez (junior female -52 kgs.) vie for medals on Sunday.
