Indonesia – Floods, landslides and 5.8 M earthquake (GDACS, BMKG, ADINet) (ECHO Daily Flash of 13 June 2022)

Over the past few days, heavy rain and strong winds have been occurring in Sumatra and Sulawesi Islands, causing floods, triggering landslides and leading to damage.

According to the ASEAN Disaster Information Network (ADINet), in Sumatra, more than 900 people have been affected across the Provinces of Bengkulu, South Sumatra and West Sumatra. In West Sulawesi province, almost 500 people have been affected by floods and landslides over Mamuju Regency.

On 8 June, Mamuju Regency was hit by a 5.8 M earthquake at a depth of 10 km that injured at least 23 people and affected 15,320 persons. The epicentre was offshore 43 km southwest of the western coast of Mamuju Regency.

On 13-14 June, moderate to heavy rain with thunderstorms is forecast over the affected Provinces.

COURTESY CALL OF THE DEPUTY FOREIGN MINISTER OF UKRAINE ON FOREIGN AFFAIRS SECRETARY LOCSIN

PASAY CITY, 13 June 2022 – Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Dmytro Senik paid a courtesy call on Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin, Jr. on 09 June 2022 as part of the former’s Working Visit in Manila. The two diplomats discussed enhancing relations between the Philippines and Ukraine and fruitful cooperation in various fields of mutual interest, such as food and energy security.

With regard to the crisis in Ukraine, Deputy Foreign Minister Senik expressed his gratitude for the principled stand that the Philippines had undertaken on UN Resolutions on Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Secretary Locsin thanked Ukraine for helping facilitate the safe passage of Filipino nationals in Ukraine for their onward repatriation to the Philippines.

They also discussed the possible opening of the Embassy of Ukraine in Manila in the near future, while Secretary Locsin proposed that the Philippines should also open an Embassy in Kyiv. This year marks the 30th milestone anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Ukraine. The two countries formally established diplomatic relations on 07 April 1992.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs presided over the opening ceremony of Exhibition of the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of BIMSTEC at Charoennakorn Hall, ICONSIAM BANGKOK

On 13 June 2022, H.E. Mr. Don Pramudwinai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand, presided over the opening ceremony of the Exhibition of the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of BIMSTEC at Charoennakorn Hall, ICONSIAM. The Secretary General of BIMSTEC, Ambassadors and representatives of the BIMSTEC Member States, private sectors, and educational institutions also participated in the event.

The exhibition, which will be on display from 13 to 19 June 2022, is being held to commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Establishment of BIMSTEC and to raise awareness about the organization. The exhibition highlights 25-year history and accomplishments of BIMSTEC, and role of Thailand as Chair of BIMSTEC, including action plan and benefits for Thai People. It also introduces “PRO BIMSTEC – Prosperous, Resilient and Open” which is the main vision of Thailand in driving BIMSTEC community to be prosperous, resilient and Open as well as prepared to deal with the challenges of Post-Covid-19 recovery.

On this occasion, the Ministry also launched the BIMSTEC Knowledge Platform – BKP, an online platform consisting of a website and a Facebook page, to make BIMSTEC more accessible to public and to provide updates on BIMSTEC’s activities during Thailand’s chairmanship of BIMSTEC.

BEDOK POLICE DIVISION’S PUBLIC SPIRITEDNESS AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP AWARD CEREMONY

On 8 June 2022, Bedok Police Division presented the Public Spiritedness Award to three members of the public. Three organisations were also commended for their strong community partnership with the Police.

Cases Commended for Public Spiritedness Award

On 26 September 2021, Mr Woon Song Khoon assisted the Police in the arrest of two men for a case of possession of duty-unpaid cigarettes. Mr Woon witnessed the men unloading boxes from a van and behaving suspiciously near Block 318 Tampines Street 33. He had observed the driver passing two boxes believed to be contraband cigarettes, to the men before driving off. Mr Woon provided crucial information to the Police, which led to the arrest of the two subjects.

On 25 October 2021, Mr Lee Kum Yew and Mr Noor Sazleigh Bin Noor Mohamed assisted the Police in the arrest of a man for his suspected involvement in a case of outrage of modesty along Jalan Loyang Besar. Mr Lee had heard cries for help and gave chase to a man who was seen running away. While giving chase, he called the Police and provided timely updates on the man’s whereabouts. At the same time, Mr Noor Sazleigh was driving past when he saw the man being chased by Mr Lee. Mr Lee briefly shared what happened and Mr Noor Sazleigh joined the chase in his car. The man was finally detained by the two individuals and handed over to the Police.

Organisations Commended for Community Partnership Award

Three organisations were also recognised for their strong partnership and close collaboration with Bedok Police Division, in enhancing their security and crime prevention measures as well as facilitating Police operations. In recognition of their significant contributions, the following organisations were presented with the Community Partnership Award:

Changi General Hospital;

Singapore Expo; and

IKEA Tampines.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) Heng Chih Yang, Commander of Bedok Police Division said: “The close partnership and trust between the Police and the community is crucial in keeping Singapore safe. I am pleased to recognise our deserving recipients who had played an important role in assisting the police to prevent, deter and detect crime. All these efforts make the community safer and more secure. Their public-spiritedness and collaboration with the Police are indeed commendable.”

The Police are appealing for information on the whereabouts of 62-year-old Mr Selamat Bin Arsid. He was last seen in the vicinity of 69 Boon Keng Road on 10 May 2022 at about 10am.
